Acne skin care regimen made easy

Guthy Renker Corporation

Living with breakouts can be so frustrating if you do not have a good acne skin care regimen. I‘ve been there – as a matter of fact, I’m still there. I used to comb my hair to the front so that I could hide the acne on my forehead. I used a lot of foundation makeup to get the extra coverage I needed to hide the scars. Fortunately, everything turned around and I’ve been in a good place ever since. Where there is a will, there is a way . . . you no longer have to suffer the way I did. Products to have on hand

Cleanser – Cleanse twice a day, and after sweating (during workouts). There’s no need to scrub acne skin or use a harsh soap. Use an oil-free cleanser or gentle foaming face wash. Either will remove excess oil and dirt without stripping your skin of its natural oils or irritating your skin.

Moisturizer – Use a moisturizer that is oil-free and says “noncomedogenic” (won’t clog pores). An oil-free or water-based light moisturizer that contains SPF 15 or greater is ideal to use.

Exfoliant – This product does not help clear acne. In fact, it can aggravate the skin and make acne worse. It also may make it more difficult to tolerate prescription acne medications, so it is best not to use it when treating acne.
*Exfoliant refers to a facial scrub that removes the dead layers of your skin to leave it feeling smooth, invigorated and healthy.

Toner/Astringent – I only recommend a toner if it’s specifically for acne skin care, and contains 2% salicylic acid, which is known to reduce breakouts. Otherwise, don’t use it. It can aggravate the skin and make acne worse. It also may make it more difficult to tolerate prescription acne medications, so it is best not to use it when treating acne.
*Toner refers to a lotion designed to cleanse the skin and shrink pores, usually used on the face.

    Treatment – None recommended

Tips for dealing with acne skin care

◈When you wash your face, use your fingertips because a towel can irritate the skin
◈Don’t scrub the skin because this will cause irritation
◈Use lukewarm water (not hot water) when cleansing
◈Shampoo regularly if you have oily hair
◈If you use oily hair care products, I recommend shampooing everyday because the oils from your hair will come in contact with your forehead/face and cause breakouts
◈Wash your pillowcase every week
◈Keep your hands off of your face
◈Wash your face before/after working out
◈Don’t pick, pop or squeeze pimples because this causes scarring
◈If you’re already using prescribed medications, follow the directions provided by your doctor

This information is excellent if you are experiencing mild/moderate acne breakouts. If your acne is problematic I highly recommend seeing a dermatologist. Some acne breakouts are caused by vitamin/hormone deficiencies, and only a doctor can determine if that is the case.

One extra tidbit of advice: go for the dermatologist with a background in internal medicine. He/She is more likely to uncover if the cause is internal or not. Your doctor will also help you find a good acne skin care regimen depending on the prescribed medication you're using.

I will tell you, the products I currently use are all fragrance-free, water-based and noncomedogenic (won’t clog pores). Plus, you can easily find them at the local supermart or drugstore. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it. Believe me, I've been with a dermatologist for several years, and I love him!

Because I’ve been on prescribed medications for a while, I only see my doctor once a year for checkups and refills, which is excellent. I continue to receive compliments on my flawless skin so I know I’m doing the right thing!
