Apply eye makeup like a Professional
Have you struggled while trying to apply eye makeup? Does the process of applying a smokey eye seem all too confusing and overwhelming? If so, I’m going to cover the basic steps to help you apply your eye makeup like a professional, and also how to make it more dramatic for evening:
First off let’s cover the different types of eyeshadow:
Pressed eyeshadows: Come in a compact, are firm to the touch, and can have a shimmery, satin, or matte finish. Very commonly used to apply eye makeup because you don’t have to worry about picking up too much upon application.
Loose eyeshadows: Come in a small jar in the form of loose powder. Sometimes they are called “pigment”, which is just another word for color. They are easier to handle but you have to be careful not to apply too much because it is lightweight.
Creamy eyeshadows: Usually come in a small glass or plastic jar, and are creamy to the touch. They are excellent to use as a base and go well if you have dry skin. I don’t use these at all because I have very oily skin, and they tend to crease on me during the day.
Application Steps
Using your application brush, apply the eyeshadow color of your choice to the lower eyelid – you may have to close one eye to do this. If it is a color that compliments and highlights the eyebrow area, extend and blend the color all the way up to the brow bone and continue to blend so the effect is softened. Now, using a blending brush, apply a mid-tone to dark color to your crease. You may want to keep your eye open so that it’s easier to target the creased section of your eye.
Bring the brush into your crease and move it back and forth to soften the effect. Next, extend the brush downwards towards the outer corner of your upper lash line (creating a backwards “C”). Continue blending back and forth to avoid harsh edges. This part takes a lot of practice until you get comfortable. To add a little more pop or shimmer, dab shimmer eyeshadow onto the lower eyelid and extend through to the inner corner and outwardly down to the bottom lash line.
To add more drama and create a smokey eye, blend a darker eyeshadow into the crease (on top of the previous eyeshadow). Blend back and forth to soften. This step is perfect if you want a night-time look! Apply eyeliner onto your waterline – you can use black, brown, or a white pencil to open the eye. Using your angle brush (or pencil liner), apply a dark eyeshadow to the top lash line and smudge to soften.
Now apply mascara to both the top and bottom lash line – feel free to curl your lashes if you need to. If you prefer some added pop to the brow bone, you can blend a lighter color underneath the eyebrow, or leave as is.
There you go – you just learned how to apply eye makeup like the professionals you see at the makeup counter!
