Successful Beauty Jobs that may interest you
Beauty jobs are the most sought-after jobs because you get to do what you love, and you have the opportunity to work with people. Doing what you love is a form of self-expression, which isn’t always possible in the corporate world. From my experience, being in the beauty industry allows me to look the way I want to look without someone considering it a “distraction”. The most important factor to me is professionalism but the truth is being professional doesn’t necessarily have to mean dressing conservatively. I like to take risks from time to time, so I can say I really enjoy being in the field.
If you’re curious about beauty jobs and if they’re for you, just read below and see if any one of them sparks interest. I will admit that the beauty industry is one of the most stable industries. Even in a recession, women always want to look good. If you want to get anywhere in life, appearance is key to your success, so beauty jobs will always be available because of that.
Esthetician
Estheticians are professionals who specialize in skin care. They can help you with your specific skin care needs, whether it’s normal, oily, dry, mature, or sensitive. Common services provided are facials, waxing and exfoliations. They can give you guidance on which products to use on your skin, as well as helping you come up with a daily skin care regimen. To be a successful esthetician you must have a great personality and work well with customers. To have a competitive edge over your peers you need to have lots of training under your belt including microdermabrasion, chemical peel, and makeup artistry. The more training and certificates you have, the better off you’ll be. The places were estheticians often work are day and medi spas, plastic surgeon office, or maybe own their own salon. Considering all other beauty jobs, this is the one that is least talked-about, but is gaining popularity.
Beauty Consultant
A Beauty Consultant is someone who helps you enhance your overall appearance by showing you how to use cosmetics products. They can work in department stores or for independent cosmetics companies. The most widely recognized beauty consultants work for Mary Kay Cosmetics, but there are other smaller companies that offer beauty jobs as well. As a consultant you will enjoy corporate discounts, education on beauty and skincare, working with people, and a flexible lifestyle. You also can enjoy tax benefits during your career. Anything you purchase that benefits your business (car, camera, gas, home etc) can be used as a tax write-off at the end of the year. As a consultant, your job is to make sure you’re your customer’s personal consultant in helping them find the right products for their skin. In addition, you have the opportunity to educate them on how to use the products and brushes properly so they can duplicate the look on their own. You will have close contact with your clients so they can contact you whenever they need to for beauty advice. This is one of the most recommended beauty jobs in the industry.
Makeup Artist
A makeup artist is someone that applies beauty makeup or prosthetic makeup for film, print, TV, video or weddings. Working as a makeup artist gives you access to work on photoshoots, videos, commercials, weddings and runway. If you are interested in doing makeup but don’t have any experience, start by getting some books and studying the looks on the different models. By analyzing the different looks, you can think of ways to duplicate it on your own. The most important thing you can do for yourself is PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and more PRACTICE!! Practice makes perfect when sharpening your skills, and ask your friends for their honest advice on how you can improve, and be receptive to the feedback. Anyone can label themselves as a makeup artist, but it’s how you measure up to your competition that speaks volumes about your work. Speak with professionals and work alongside them to get an idea of what works and what doesn’t. It is imperative that you have lots of drive and passion because you don’t get paid when you don’t work. It takes time for word-of-mouth buzz to create, so until then you have to push for everything you get, but it will pay off in the end.
Hairstylist
Having the right appearance is just the beginning to establishing yourself as a hairstylist. You’re selling an image, so you need to look one step above the clients that you’re serving, and the clients should want to look like you. On an average day you’ll be doing a lot of coloring, hair extensions, cutting, and hair styling. To break into the field requires a cosmetology license, which you can receive while still in high school, or attend a school afterwards to get the training. If you’re interested in pursuing a career in cosmetology, the advice I can give you is to first get a job at places like Super Cuts, Regis Hair Salon, or Hair Cuttery. The reason is because cosmetology schools will only teach you the basic skills in doing hair, but working for a salon chain will provide you the opportunity to take advance classes to further your knowledge. Regis is my top favorite because it is an all-around salon when it comes to coloring, cutting, styling, and updos. Whatever your need, Regis has a class that teaches information on that specific area. There are a variety of ways to achieve certain hairstyles, so get the necessary experience at a chain salon before venturing out on your own. Another tip is to not limit yourself to only doing hair. If your school offers classes on nails, pedicures, facials, and makeup, LEARN IT! The industry is extremely competitive, so you need to get as much education necessary to branch out and be successful, regardless of what you’re doing.
