Set it with Face Powder!

Face powder provides a smooth, even finish to your complexion by setting your foundation and controlling shine on areas most prone to oiliness. It will keep your foundation from slipping, settling into fine lines or wearing off during the day. It is essential to your makeup routine unless you wear mineral or cream-to-powder foundations. These foundations are either already in powder form, or have a powder finish, so there’s no need to add extra.

If you normally wear concealer by itself, it’s important to cover it with face powder to disguise the product. Most come in a variety of colors and textures, from very sheer types to heavier foundation and powder combos. You have a lot to choose from, so this should be pretty easy.

Pressed powder: Provides good coverage and can be used for all skin tones. You can keep it with you during the day, it’s easy to carry, and allows more control because it won’t get all over your clothes. Contains extra oils to keep it in pressed form. Most commonly used.

Loose powder: Sheer compared to pressed powder. Because it typically comes in a larger container, it’s not easy to carry, so you may find yourself applying it only in the mornings. It’s great for sensitive skin because it doesn’t contain a lot of oils. When applying it dust off any excess with a brush so you don’t get it all over your clothes. Comes in a variety of colors and is very light.

Translucent powder: This version contains no color or bulk, so it creates the sheerest setting for foundation. It is available in loose and pressed form, and can be used on all skin tones.

Powder foundation: Now you’re getting the best of both worlds! You can use this alone or with a liquid foundation for heavier coverage. Please note that if you choose to use it with another foundation, apply it lightly, or you will look fake. Because I have very oily skin, this is my personal favorite!!

When selecting your product, it’s good to select one shade lighter than your skin tone. This is really important especially if you have oily skin because it will turn a little darker as it settles. Face powders offer good flexibility because you can wear it alone or over foundation.

Tips

If you want to wear it over foundation, then go for translucent. If you want more coverage, I highly suggest dusting on pressed powder. If you prefer to use the powder puff, press firmly onto your skin, don’t rub. Rubbing creates streaks by moving the product, and you don’t want that. If you notice that you’ve aged after applying powder, then chances are you have applied too much. Use lighter applications going forward.

Touch-up tips for oily skin

First you want to use tissue or blotting papers to soak up oil. If you apply more face powder on top of the oil sitting on your skin, it will appear darker and look cakey, so soak up the oil first. To control shine, use loose powder with a big fluffy brush. If you need heavier coverage to balance out skin tone, use an oil-free pressed powder.

As a side note, a few cosmetic lines carry blotting powders, which are also convenient and come in compact form. They contain minimal color, so you can blot the oil without adding extra color or product to your face.
