Makeup Brushes used by Professionals
The right makeup brushes used on your face, brows, eyes, and lips are necessary to create a polished look and perfect blending. There are so many out on the market, and they are sold everywhere from department stores at the mall to the local pharmacy or grocery store in your neighborhood. Let’s talk about the most common makeup brushes you’ll need:
Eye Brushes
• Mascara Wand brush – used to separate your eyelashes after applying mascara. You can also use it to separate your brows. • Angle brush – this is commonly used to fill in the eyebrows with powder eyeshadow. It’s cool for applying eyeliner too. To apply liner, just dip in water first and dip into your powder eyeshadow, then sweet across your eyelid next to your lash line. • Eyeliner brush – used for precise application, it is used to apply liquid or gel eyeliner. • Fluffy eyeshadow brush – this is usually made of synthetic bristles, so you can apply powder eyeshadows with it. The head is a bit larger to cover larger areas of the eye. • Blending brush – you can blend the outer “V” (the outer eye and crease area) with this brush. The bristles are tapered to blend anywhere on the eye. You can blend multiple colors with this brush. • Smudge brush – also known as the ‘shader brush’, the bristles are short and stiff and is a must-have if you want a subtle smoky-eye look. I use this brush to apply powder eyeshadow onto my bottom lash line, then sweep back and forth to smudge the line to create a smoky look. • Pencil brush – great for applying dark eyeshadows into the crease and blending the outer “V”. You can also use it to smudge eyeliner on the lower lash line.
Face Brushes
• Kabuki brush – commonly referred to as a “buffer brush”, it is used to blend and apply loose powder and bronzers in a circular motion. Bristles are dome-shaped. • Powder brush – used for powder application, this comes in large and medium sizes. The medium sized brushes can also be used to apply blush. . • Foundation brush – if you use liquid or cream foundation, this is the brush to have in your makeup kit. Provides even coverage and allows you to blend the product into your skin. . • Duo Fiber brush – this is a very versatile brush that gives you an airbrush finish. Use it to apply liquid foundation, bronzer, blush, and is great for blending. The smaller version provides precise application. • Blush brush – use this to apply brush and powder bronzer. • Angle brush (Contour brush) – this larger version is used for face application to apply bronzer and create precise application of blush. If you want to contour your cheeks, this is one of the best makeup brushes to use. Just concentrate on the area directly underneath your cheekbone to contour. • Fan brush – I never use this brush, but I will admit it’s awesome for cleaning up fall-out eyeshadow underneath the eye area. The bristles are very light and fan-shaped for you to whisk away unwanted eyeshadow pigment. • Flat-top Kabuki brush – use to apply foundation and bronzer. It’s a great idea to use this for blending liquid and cream foundation. • Lip brush – you can find this in retractable form to keep in your purse for day use. The tip is very small and the bristles are somewhat flexible. This brush makes it easier to apply lipstick and lip liner with precise application.
