Tips for Oily Skin Makeup
When you want to do makeup for oily skin, it’s all about the preparation. You need to use a cleanser, toner, and something underneath the foundation to control the oil. What I’ve been using for the past year to control the oil is a face primer. I apply mine using my fingers, but you can use a regular foundation brush (has stiff bristles compared to my soft fingertips). I like to use my fingers because I can work it into my skin much easier. All you need is a small amount applied to the forehead, chin, cheeks and nose area. Blend out towards the outer corners of the face.
The object is for the face primer to serve as a matte foundation to help keep your skin oils under control. It doesn’t matter what type of foundation you use, but make sure it doesn’t contain oil. I personally prefer foundation in powder form, but I also use a combination of liquid makeup with sheer powder, and both work just fine. When applying liquid makeup, use a foundation brush for even coverage. You don’t want to use too much product, especially with oily skin because it will crease into the lines on your face or look clumpy. Don’t forget the key is to apply powder afterwards to absorb oils.
If you find that you get excess oil buildup throughout the day, instead of applying more powder and makeup to cover it, use a blotting sheet. Blotting sheets pull and lift out the excess oil from your face. Other recommendations I find helpful are blotting powders and simply blotting with tissue paper. Be sure not to move the makeup while you’re blotting, or else it will be ruined.
In the eye area particularly, it’s helpful to use waterproof or water-resistant eyeliner and mascara to keep the makeup on all day. I recommend a powder eyeshadow compared to a cream-based eyeshadow because cream-based shadows will move around and start to crease during the day. When using a powder eyeshadow, you need to use an eye primer or a water-resistant base to guard against any oil breakthrough. I think the key phrase is “keep anything oily or creamy away from your face” if you want to maintain that matte look through the day.
I’ve always felt my oily skin was a bit of a hindrance, but now I’m appreciating it as I get older because I look 9 years younger than my peers – it’s a great problem to have!
