Test foundation to find the right color

O.k., now you know what type of makeup you want, now it’s time to test foundation colors! Here’s what to do when shopping for foundation at your local cosmetics counter:

First, look at your natural skin tone to see if you have yellow, orange, pink or red undertones. If you have no idea, ask a few experienced cosmetic consultants. After that, locate their section of foundations that have those corresponding undertones.

Pick three shades to try: one that looks about right, a lighter color, and one that is slightly darker. Test foundation along your jaw line by swiping each color with a wedge sponge. Do not test on your hand and definitely not on the inside of your wrist because these areas are slightly different in color. View it under different light settings to make sure none of them look weird when the light changes.

I highly recommend going out into the daylight to see which color blends best. Make sure the color isn’t too red or yellow for your complexion.

The shade that disappears or perfectly matches your skin is the one!

Some extras to keep in mind . . . make sure the foundation match blends well with your neck. To avoid having that annoying line of demarcation, use a wedge sponge to lightly blend the color down from your face to your neck. If your face looks too chalky, go a shade darker. Your look must be realistic and natural. If you’re still on the fence about which color to try, have the consultant apply the makeup to your face and wear it all day.

By the end of the day you will know whether you like the foundation color or not. View it in the sunlight as well as artificial light. How well does it stay on? Does it run, get dry or oily? These are good questions to ask yourself before purchasing any cosmetic product.

If "the one" tends to look ashy/gray or green, dust on a little bronzing powder to warm up your complexion. Also, you may want to consider adjusting your color during the winter months since your skin tone tends to be more pale.
