An Introduction to Whiteheads

It’s very common for whiteheads to be mistaken as regular pimples, but they’re not. They form the same way as regular pimples, but have to be treated differently in order to prevent scarring of any kind. They are very similar to blackheads; the only difference is that they exist underneath closed pores, so they haven’t been exposed to oxygen. They usually occur in the nose and cheekbone area, although they can form in other areas of the face as well.

Picking and squeezing them is not a good idea at all because it can cause infection, irritation, and scarring. In order to remove it successfully, you will need to purchase a comedone remover from your local pharmacy. You want to begin the removal process when they are breaking through the top layer of the skin. You will know this because the texture will be hard and white.

The removal process is easy!

First, you want to open those pores by steaming your face. You can use a facial steamer, or fill a bowl/pot with hot steamy water (fill about half-way) and drape a towel over your head while holding your head over the bowl/pot for about 10 minutes. Make sure the water isn’t too hot or you may scald yourself. Another way to open pores is to place a warm cloth over your face for at least five minutes.

Next, use the comedone remover to remove the whitehead from its pore. When using it, roll the loop end on the whitehead and gently squeeze it out of its pore. Clean the area with alcohol or antibacterial soap afterwards. Using a clay mask twice a week will help with the removal process as well as prevent them from forming in the first place.

Daily Treatment

◈Cleanse your face twice daily with an oil-free cleanser
◈Use an oil-free moisturizer with SPF 15 or greater
◈Look for acne products containing benzoyl peroxide, tretinoin (Retin-A), or isotretinoin (Accutane), and follow the directions on how to use them properly
◈Combine an exfoliating cleanser with a good facial scrub for daily treatment and prevention, and they can be used in place of the clay mask
◈If you’re interested in using a toner, then I recommend one with salicylic or glycolic acid
◈All products used on the face should be oil-free or noncomedogenic (doesn’t clog pores)
